HOUSTON: Media Training - October 12

HIWj, Colectivo Flatlander (www.colectivoflatlander.org) and Progressive Communicators Network (http://www.spiritinaction.net/pcn/) are putting together a communications training for community organizers. It will be facilitated by Tomas Aguilar through popular education - so the idea is all bring their experiences as a source of knowledge to share with the group.

details:
October 12th - 10am - 2pm
(we may break this up into 2 sessions if folks are unavailable to come the whole day)
@ Houston Interfaith Worker Justice Center
2906 Houston Ave, Houston, TX 77009

$15 registration (to cover costs)
Scholarships available

topics:
* Overview of communications from a grassroots perspective (what does this look like? organizing and communicating your issue/values; why who does your communicating matters as much or more as what messages you are trying to communicate)
* Difficult situations: How to talk to your local not-so-friendly media; not being shy about talking about race to the media
* Framing your message: an overview of why it's important to tell your story based on your values; using values-based framing or messaging that includes others in the struggle for social justice;
* Spokesperson training: chance to practice doing a mock interview. Will have camera with video in case we want to view our practice interviews on a computer.

Please let me know if you're interested! Tomas is FABULOUS... and so are YOU all! So I think we could all gain from this training.

PEACE. laura
