SPRING: Emergency Demonstration against US Border Watch on Saturday, October 20

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Yesterday morning, about 20 activists, day laborers, and local residents successfully confronted U.S. Border Watch members in Spring, Texas. About 20 members of that racist, anti-immigrant group had gathered on the sidewalks in front of the Wimbledon Plaza strip mall at 16324 Stuebner Airline Drive. They have been harassing day laborers who gather in front of the adjacent Shamrock gas station and urging local residents to oppose a proposed day laborer center in Spring.

Thanks to the leadership of the Latin American Organization for Immigrant Rights, a powerful response to Border Watch was organized in record time. People driving by this location yesterday morning saw a wonderful multinational group of workers challenging Border Watch’s racism, holding signs that affirm the dignity of all workers, and voicing strong support for the day laborers. If you saw the news coverage on Ch. 45 (Univision), then you know that it was a good morning’s work for us.

Unfortunately, Border Watch plans to return to the same site next week, so an emergency demonstration will take place next Saturday, October 20, at 8 am. We will gather at the same location—on the sidewalks on front of the Wimbledon Plaza strip mall at 16324 Stuebner Airline Drive. This protest is being organized by the Latin American Organization for Immigrant Rights, the International Socialist Organization, the Irish Unity Committee, and the Progressive Workers Organizing Committee. We urge the broadest possible participation in this demonstration. For more information, call (832) 282-6997, (832) 692-2306, (713) 302-3865, or (713) 528-1817.

In Solidarity,

Rona and David
