Dear Members and Friends of NNIRR,
The coming year holds great promise and great peril for those who advocate for immigration policy based on human rights, dignity and justice. While federal immigration reform has reached an impasse, attacks on immigrants and refugees have surged at local, regional and state levels. ICE raids continue to sweep up thousands, and hundreds of migrants' deceased bodies are being recovered on the U.S.-Mexico border.
At the same time, immigrant and refugee community groups are launching creative initiatives to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities and linking with other communities and movements to demand justice & fairness. Believing that this is a critical time for us to reframe the national debate on immigration, the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights is organizing a national conference in Houston, Texas, from January 18-20, 2008, to convene hundreds of community organizers, allies, and advocates from around the country. We invite your organization to endorse this event and lend your voice to this important effort.
Conference workshops and topics include:
• Lifting Immigrant Voices in the 2008 Elections
• Racism and Immigration: Bridging Communities in the Post-Katrina Era
• Pushing Back the Militarization of the Border & Interior Immigration Control
• Globalization: Exploring Immigration "Root Causes" Worldwide
• Promoting the Human Rights of Im/Migrants
• Immigration, Labor and Workers Rights
• Immigration Policy and Legislation
• Popular Education for Transformative Community Organizing
• Organizing for Immigrant and Refugee Community Leadership
• Media & Communications Skills Development
