  • how we can use our power as students to affect an industry that thrives in secrecy, exploitation, and the power relations of a flawed system
  • brainstorming/ strategizing around campus campaigns
  • learning about how workers are organizing to make change on the ground

and, most importantly,

  • meeting other activists and organizers!

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: NACCS Regional Conference in MCALLEN -- FEB 28-MAR 1

Call for Submissions

“Mi Educación es la Causa: Chicana and Chicano Pedagogy in the 21st Century.”

NACCS-Tejas Regional Conference

South Texas College, McAllen, Tejas

28 February-1 March 2008

Chicana/o scholars, NACCS Tejas membership, and the Tejas community are invited to submit papers, exhibits, performances or cultural productions for the NACCS Tejas Regional Conference at South Texas College. Through activism, the classroom, or home, Chicanas/os have worked creatively to bring about social change, both on the streets and in the classroom of this nation. This is the historical spirit that will be celebrated and examined during the 2008 NACCS Tejas Regional Conference that will be held February 28 through March 1 at South Texas College. The NACCS Tejas Regional conference will provide a forum through which we can collectively explore la causa through the prism of Chicana/o pedagogy in order to envision new teaching strategies that address the needs of la raza in the 21st century.

The 2008 NACCS Tejas steering committee is excited to announce that both Ms. Martha Cotera and Dr. Rodolfo Acuña have agreed to serve as keynote speakers. Both scholars will be discussing the past, present, and future of Chicana/o pedagogy. Please join us in welcoming both scholars to our conference.

This conference incorporates a multidisciplinary understanding of scholarship and performance and therefore accepts papers and productions from a wide range of disciplines. While the primary theme for the conference centers on Chicana/o pedagogy in the 21st century, other topics related to the Chicana/o experience are also welcomed. A 100-250 word abstract should be submitted for the paper, panel, exhibit, performance, or other.

Deadline for Submissions: January 14, 2008

Send questions and proposals electronically to Victor Gomez at vgomez@southtexascollege.edu

Worker Center Delegations -- NOV 5, 8

Two workers have cases of wage theft with us that merit a visit to applicable patron rata. Please let me know if you could join us to show some solidarity with these workers who need their due wages!

Monday 11/5-

Abel Hernandez worked for Las Rosas Mexican Grill. He is owed $3,553 in overtime and back pay! The company has refused to pay him what he's owed. We need to put some more pressure on Las Rosas!

Meet at the Worker Center @ 10am. We'll meet up with Abel and travel to the restaurant to arrive during lunch hours

Thursday 11/8-

Martin Gonzalez worked for Azteck Communications - a vendor of Cricket phones. There's all kinds of abuse going on there. Not only are workers denied their full wages, but also clients are being over-charged for simple things like changing the language option on their phone. Ain't right.
